Depression and Anxiety

Depression

Life is not always easy and it is normal for us all to feel sad, moody or low from time to time. Sometimes these feelings continue intensely for long periods of time. Depression may be diagnosed when you have felt sad, down or miserable most of the time for more than a two week period and have experienced other symptoms such as withdrawal from usual activities, loss of interest or pleasure in things you would usually enjoy, feeling overwhelmed by strong negative feelings such as sadness, guilt, indecisiveness, irritability, hopelessness, strong negative thoughts about yourself, others and the future, and perhaps physical symptoms.

There is a lot of information available online about depression (see our Resources section) if you would like to find out more about symptoms, treatments, and tips to cope if you are concerned that yourself or a loved one may be experiencing depression.

Anxiety

Everyone feels stressed and worried sometimes, particularly when faced with challenging situations and events. When anxious feelings don’t go away, happen without any particular reason or make it hard to cope with daily life it may be the sign of an anxiety condition. At these times, you might benefit from support and treatment for an anxiety disorder.

Different sorts of problems with anxiety can be experienced and symptoms may include physical symptoms such as a sense of panic, a racing heart, tight sensations in the chest, breathing changes, restlessness, and feeling tense or wound up. Anxious thoughts and feelings such as excessive fear, worry, catastrophizing, or obsessive thinking, as well as avoidance of specific situations/people/places can also be common. For more info see our Resources section.
