Adjustment to illness, loss and change
Adjusting to change in our relationships, health, abilities, and life circumstances is not easy. When things change, our way of thinking, feeling and being in the world can be challenged. Many people find it difficult to cope when faced with pain, illness, relationship breakdown, retirement, fertility issues, bereavement and other losses. Psychological intervention can assist in managing emotion and mood changes at these times, as well as helping to explore and develop adaptive ways of coping.
Our team work with many people struggling to adjust to health challenges such as Amputation, Chronic Pain, Cancer, Epilepsy, Functional Neurological Disorder, Illness, Neurological conditions, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Rheumatological conditions, Spinal cord injury, Stroke, Terminal illness and Traumatic injury.
We support clients living with many types of losses including bereavement, loss of relationships, loss of ability, and loss of independence.
We assist our clients to navigate through the difficulties of change in relationships, fertility, parenting, retirement, career change, and when faced with other major stressors.
Our team work to identify individual challenges, understand and match these to well researched therapeutic approaches to improve coping and provide support at these challenging times. These approaches may include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Humanistic Existential Psychotherapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
